Enhanced rock weathering · South Africa

Permanent carbon removal from South African farms

We spread crushed rock and industrial waste on farmland. It locks away CO₂ for thousands of years and makes the soil healthier.

About Temvelo

Building Southern Africa’s carbon removal industry

Temvelo is an enhanced rock weathering project developer, founded by Africa Climate Ventures.

Our name comes from Zulu and siSwati and means “nature”.

What we do

  • 1
Find the right rockWe screen and validate suitable feedstocks.
  • 2
Measure rigorouslyWe track carbon removal to top international standards.
  • 3
Work with farmersWe finance and deliver projects on their land.
  • 4
Deliver creditsWe supply verified removals to carbon buyers.
How it works

Nature’s carbon cycle, sped up

Rocks absorb CO₂ as they weather. Crushing them speeds this up from millennia to years.

  1. Spread

Crushed rock goes on farmland, like agricultural lime.

  2. Dissolve

CO₂ in rainwater forms a weak acid in the soil.

  3. React

The acid reacts with the rock, capturing carbon as bicarbonate.

  4. Store

Rivers carry it to the ocean, where it stays for millennia.

Why South Africa

The right rock, people and farmland

  • Feedstock

A century of mining has left large volumes of suitable rock.

  • Talent

World-class geoscience, engineering and soil science.

  • Farmland

Commercial farms with acidic soils and a warm, wet climate.
